You should be very proud of your family/staff and the unique group of contractors you work with. They do an excellent job. We've viewed several new homes since we moved into our new home, but unless it's an Onken built home, it just doesn't measure up to the quality and unique workmanship built into your homes. As you folks know, I have represented several general contractors and dozens of subs over the past 20 years. Prior to you building our home in Saugatuck, Lynne and I have also had one new house built from the ground up and put a 2,500 sq.ft. addition on an existing home.

In all of my experience, I have not seen better workmanship than that of Onken Builders. Especially in the areas of framing, rough carpentry and finished carpentry, the craftsmanship at Onken is outstanding. We could not be more pleased with Onken Builders on the renovation of our authentic log home. The work and craftsmanship were top quality, and we are proud to show off our home to anyone. An added bonus was the creativity and design talent that assisted our decision-making process from start to finish. The summer is over and we have been enjoying the log cabin very much, since we moved in on May 15. I know that we haven't always been the easiest clients to deal with but we really appreciate your willingness to listen to our ideas and figure out a way to make them work. The greatest pleasure for us has been dealing with you and your consistent display of honestly and integrity. Last fall, my husband and I decided to hire Onken Builders to build our custom home in Laketown Township, Michigan, and we could not have been happier with our decision. Our home was finished on schedule in early April and it meets, even exceeds, our expectations in every way.

This was our first home-building experience, so we were quite nervous in the beginning. There was a lot to learn about the different building materials and the building process itself. In addition, we were living outside of Chicago while our home was being built. So we were, of course, very concerned about the integrity of our builder and his subcontractors. However, Keith and Todd Onken, as well as their office staff, earned our trust early on through good communication, excellent cost-cutting suggestions, attention to detail, and their hard work ethic. Every time we came out to see the home we were more and more pleased with the progress and the skill employed at every stage. We even had a family member who is a homebuilder in the Chicago area come out to examine our home before the drywall was hung. He was equally impressed with the Onkens' work and that of their subcontractors. We were relieved to hear from a professional that no corners were being cut.

Some of the highlights of our home include wonderful wrap-around porches; a very practical, but beautiful kitchen; cultured stone exterior trim and fireplace; a spacious cedar-trimmed screened-in dining deck; and beautiful maple doors and finish trim throughout. Keith Onken helped us to choose the perfect location for our home on our hilly wooded lot. The Onkens also shared our concern for the forest environment in which our home was built, and ensured that as few trees as possible were sacrificed in the building process. The Onkens are truly "custom" homebuilders. Keith and Todd listened carefully and did their very best to meet our expectations.

When Keith first took us out to see some homes that he had built, we were struck by several things. He was very patient with us and never gave us the 'hard sell.' Then we realized that the 'hard sell' wasn't really necessary because the homes he showed us were so beautiful they sold themselves. The other thing we noticed was that the previous customers whose homes we toured were on very friendly terms with Keith and recommended him highly. Other builders from whom we received estimates would not let us see the inside of many of the homes they built. That's a problem because the quality of the finish trim is what you look at everyday, and that is one of the areas where the Onkens excel.

From what we have heard, to enjoy the building of your home is a rare luxury. But we DID enjoy it and found it a fairly relaxing adventure. The Onken family and their staff were a pleasure to work with. We are happy to recommend Onken Builders without reservation.
